Talk: Say No! Be a Good Product Owner.

Scrum is trendy now, am I right, huh? No matter whether we are really Agile in our organization. We should have Product Owners, Scrum Masters and.... a lot of dev workers because our partners can imagine our company as modern/cool. For a lot of companies Product Owner = Project Manager = Product Manager = someone who is responsible for project delivery in a shape expected by the boss. And it’s the wrong way to do Agile and be a Product Owner. It’s so so bad.

During my talk I will be focused on communication and organization skills every Product Owner should have. I will try to explain why good Product Owner is not a Project Manager but someone who has a „helicopter view” for projects fitting company strategy and know how to defend it against stakeholders, customers or users.

Executive Talk: Getting Out of Monolith.

Mostly I will talk about getting out of a software monolith: old and ugly but bread bringer nevertheless. A monolith, written by people no longer around, or the ones pretending they had nothing to do with its creation, is a side effect of an early success of product organization.

Regretfully, this success usually predates proper organization structure and all the attempts at changing the monolith face inevitable effects of Conway’s law “The organization of the software and the organization of the software team will be congruent”.

The talk will be an attempt at synthesis, as we all are bored to death by analytical case studies, still some examples will be provided, without naming the names.

Talk: Group and Anti-Group.

Few thoughts about psychological group dynamics on unconscious level and a role of a leader in overcoming emotional and interpersonal obstacles in growth. I believe that group is a living organism, which can be understood both on conscious, visible level and in deeper, unconscious agenda.

While working with groups and individuals who are striving for emotional development I have recognized that unconscious processes have bigger influence on emotional, motivational and interpersonal functioning. It applies both to a single human and group as a whole. As well as each individual group has its hidden, usually emotional secrets composed of desires and fears, which in mutual dynamics determine its development. I believe that by recognizing this dynamics and helping group to understand its occurrence and purpose, leader can successfully stimulate growth of emotional, motivational and interpersonal cooperation.

During my talk I share with you few ideas about development of emotional and interpersonal functioning of a groups. I give couple of hints for leaders who are interested in supporting teams in psychological growth and maturity.

If you are using Scrum, it is almost certain that you are using Stories to describe your Product Backlog items. It is another near¬certainty that if you are using Stories, you write them down using this format: “As a <user or stakeholder type> I want <some software feature> So that <some business value>” As someone who cares about the state of agile practice, I want to offer some alternatives, so that agile teams remember that the point of the story is in the telling, not the template. The shared understanding comes from the conversation, not the card. By offering you different ways to ‘tell’ the story in its short written form, I hope you will be able to reignite a greater level of meaning, interest and engagement in your team’s discussions about the work they are doing to build great software that matters to people.

Experience: Let Your Team Eliminate Waste.

According to the lean way of thinking *everything that* doesn’t bring any value to your end customer is waste. Thus, first define what the value really is, then focus on eliminating these activities which don’t contribute to that value.

Seems easy and obvious but is not. During our day-to-day work we generate more waste than we realise. Hidden work in progress (WIP) and focusing on irrelevant activities are the things that blow teams’ time. That is why good lean practises should much more often meet agile teams.

Talk: SM Service to the Organization - Yeah, Right...

Are You a Scrum Master who wants to serve to the Organization, but no one listens? “Tough luck!” and “what a surprise!” - it might happen on an enterprise level as well as in a small company. There is no common way to implement this part of The Scrum Guide - yup... framework, means no detailed solutions. Personally I advice to observe oneself while working with teams, find your superpowers of SM role and use them while working with Organisation as well.

I will share my own story for this, naming some possible take-aways that in my case made me being heard. Including: ways of moderating meetings focused on solving problems or creating a common way, five-minutes visualization exercises, lean approach with data or kata-way of creating additional value. All of that to open the doors for further improvements.

What would happen if we extend this approach, summarize retrospectives on higher level and also perform them with broader or different group - to get a bigger picture, improve the way we work on cross-team / whole organization level. Talk: A Brief History of Time (In Mobile Applications Team).

Now, what is the most effective and profitable approach to building mobile applications teams? If we want to create a good, cross-platform mobile application we need developers for Android (Java), iOS, WP, backend (.NET) and also UX designer, tester and graphic designer.

That is quite a lot of people and their work is heavily dependent on each other. Assuming we use Scrum framework, is it better to build one team with all competencies needed? Or should we create few teams, each focused on different area?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach? I will try to answer those questions by presenting a brief history of one mobile applications team. We will discuss the problems we encountered and solutions we have tried.

And finally we will discuss, how did we managed to deliver an Increment of working software after each sprint?

One of the most common problems agile teams face is taking on Stories that are too large. Large Stories are harder to estimate, more time consuming to develop and test, and require more complex acceptance criteria and tests. Story Mapping is a useful technique for product design, but it can also be used very effectively to help break down large epics into small, valuable slices that can be developed and tested incrementally. The placebo effect is a startling reminder of the power our minds have over our perceived reality. Now cognitive scientists tell us that this is only a small part of what our minds can do.

Research has identified what I like to call "an agile mindset," an attitude that equates failure and problems with opportunities for learning, a belief that we can all improve over time, that our abilities are not fixed but evolve with effort.

What's surprising about this research is the impact of an agile mindset on creativity and innovation, estimation, and collaboration in and out of the workplace. I'll relate what's known about this mindset and share some practical suggestions that can help all of us become even more agile.

The key to employing Scrum professionally is creating Done Increments of product, where “Done” reflects releasable in production. This requires professional development, proper practices and standards, cross¬functional collaboration, and inner¬Sprint feedback loops. It might take another two decades to actually get there.

Imagine you take over a role of a Product Owner working with a small but awesome team on a new piece of great software. You choose your strategy, talk to investors and sign up the contract. You feel the energy and joy of creation, a thrill of pushing 1.0 version into people’s hands and a bit of panic when the future unfolds not quite as predicted. How will you deal with this uncertainty? What will be your strategy? Will it pay off? Will you work harder or smarter? Will you beat your competition or decide not to compete? Will you manage to complete the game before the stress level become unbearable or your funds run out?

We believe teaching is most effective when it's fun. Based on our experience we created a board game to simulate Scrum Product Owner's job. Using the game we play together, discover together, learn together and have fun together.

We use beautifully crafted board, cards and dices to create unique sandbox experience. The game runs in turns, representing Scrum Sprints. Players participate in Sprint Planning, Sprint Review and Sprint Retrospective events. They experience all kinds of issues related to software product development one can imagine. The goal is to deliver value to customers and earn profit for the stakeholders. The rest is simple. Or is it?

Most of the players say the game is addictive and that they want to play more and more. The comments we get are enthusiastic. (“I learned a lot during this game.
